SUMMARY:Tanz: Lachenmann - ABO 3
DESCRIPTION:Helmut Lachenmann’s 90th birthday on 27th November 2025 is not just an excuse for celebration\, but also a reason for a special\, experimental jubilee concert. \nLachenmann and his music have accompanied our ensemble for over fourty years. It has challenged us\, inspired us and always pushed us to redefine our limits. His music is radical and strikes a unique balance between corporeality and analytical precision and between intuition and contemplation. \nWith the choreographer Emi Miyoshi and the SHIBUI KOLLEKTIV we endeavour to shine a new light on Lachenmann’s music: The presence of dancers and movers on stage illuminates the corporeal dimension o fLachenmann’s music. And Lachenmann’s music provides inspiration for the creation of a new choreography. \nLachenmann’s abstract musical language offers a plethora of possibilities for choreography\, not least because the musicians’ bodies themselves are involved in providing impulses in the music. Works such as Mouvement\, which explores the final twitches and movements before stiffening in death\, set movement and resistance in a charged relationship. One observes similar characteristics in solo pieces such as Guero or Pression and in ensemble pieces like Trio Fluido\, which have a choreographical component to them. Of course\, these compositions can simply be listened to. However\, at the same time\, it is clear that they are also physically and choreographically structured processes. \nIn her own language of movement\, Emi Miyoshi confronts Lachenmann‘s music. The music and dance meet as equals in this project; neither is subservient to the other. Both artists are unabashedly strong\, and the two art forms speak both on their own as well as together. \nThis project is a continuation of the learning process which Lachenmann’s music always demands. At the same time\, it is an invitation for a new learning process. We don’t yet know where this path will take us\, but what we do know is that it is a path which can only be found through cooperation and collaboration – between artists\, between sound and bodies\, between the performers and the audience. \n  \nWith works by\nHelmut Lachenmann \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, violoncello\nLukas Nowok\, sound design \nSHIBUI KOLLEKTIV\nArtistic Direction | Choreography: Emi Miyoshi\nDancers: Sophia Barr\, Marcella Centenero\, Melissa Kieffer\nCostume: Emi Miyoshi\nInstallation: Paula Mierzowsky\nTechnical Direction: Domitile Guinchard\nLighting: Steffen Melch\nProject Management | Education and Outreach : Anna Kempin\nPhoto | Video: Marc Doradzillo \nProduction: Shibui Kollektiv and Ensemble Recherche \n  \nTickets\navailable at reservix.de\, at Badische Zeitung Ticketservice and at the box office. \n  \nSupported by \nRegional Association of Independent Dance and Theater Professionals (LaFT BW) and Friends of Ensemble Recherche e. SUMMARY:Propaganda - ABO 4
DESCRIPTION:In today’s digital age\, propaganda has assumed a new form – one which is increasingly convincing and effective. Artificial intelligence and synthetic media are becoming progressively successful at creating seemingly true imitations of real people\, which brings with it enormous potential for manipulation. Deepfakes sow doubt\, infiltrate our reality and endanger democratic society. In 2022\,a fabricated video of the Ukrainian president Zelenskyy appeared on the internet\, in which he called for the surrender of Ukrainian troops. It was a shocking infringement in the midst of the war. \nEnsemble Recherche presents an artistic response to this phenomenon with its project propaganda. In collaboration with Prof. Nina Fischer\, who leads the class for experimental film und media art at the University of the arts Berlin\, two new works will be created for chamber ensemble\, electronics\, and video. Here\, deepfakes are not simply presented as fraud\, instead\, they are used as a means of artistic expression and an expression of a political construction of reality. Synthesized voices and manipulated images are not used to conceal\, but to reveal – as a means of analysis and criticism. \nTwo premieres form the core of the programme. Tamara Miller teams up with Nina Fischer and Yuheng Chen collaborates with Maya Masuda. Miller combines organic polyphony and extended techniques with posthuman and ecological considerations\, often in reference to works of literature. Chen explores modulations of instrumental sounds between pitch and noise – his music compresses fragile emotions into intensive sonic images. The programme is complemented by Arnau Brichs’ Supra Calculated Will which reflects social manipulation musically\, and Joanna Bailie’s Artificial Environments\, which layers real sounds with fictitious comments – a game with our expectations and perception. \nIn this project\, propaganda is not only conceived as a danger\, but also an opportunity for an artistic intervention. Inspired by Oliver Marchart’s „conflictual aesthetics”\, propaganda is proposed as a tool for political visualization and an invitation to consider new realities. Moreover\, the collaboration with the UdK is a strong symbol for the relevance of artistic research and critical artistic praxis in times of cultural policy cutbacks. \n  \nWith works by\nYuheng Chen (UA) & Maya Masuda\, Tamara Miller (UA) & Nina Fischer/Maroan el Sani\, Arnau Brichs and Joanna Bailie \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, violoncello\nFederico Ambruosi\, sound design \n  \nTickets\navailable at reservix.de\, at Badische Zeitung Ticketservice and at the box office. \n  \nSupported by\nMusikfonds\, Kunststiftung NRW and the Friends of Ensemble Recherche e. SUMMARY:Der Zukunft zugewandt - ABO 5
DESCRIPTION:In this evening\, two bodies of sound of the Freiburg music scene collide – they both comprise the same instruments but could not be more different in their musical directions. Ensemble Recherche teams up with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Freiburg in this concert. What happens\, when a chamber ensemble with nine members works with a symphony orchestra of around 70 people? Does an asymmetry or field of tension arise\, in which special qualities of each formation influence and inspire the other? \nThe evening opens with Murmurs by Rebecca Saunders\, which was composed in 2009 for Ensemble Recherche. It dances on the verge of inaudibility: whispers\, traction and breath – a fragile web of tension and silence. The sounds are not set; instead\, they are ephemeral and always in motion. \nThe highlight of the evening is the premiere of a new piece by Mirela Ivičević\, commissioned by the Freiburg Theatre. Both ensembles enter into a conversation with this piece. Ivičević accentuates the respective strengths of each ensemble and the contrasts between them\, by creating a patchwork of different movements\, in which the musicians of Ensemble Recherche play as soloists or in smaller subgroups\, in contrast to the fullness oft he orchestra. The composer conceives of music as an energy-charged process\, as a frictional surface – and finds a musical language\, one which is especially suitable for a special exchange between two ensembles. \nThe finale of the concert is Béla Bartók‘s Suite The Miraculous Mandarin\, interpreted by the Philharmonic Orchestra Freiburg- a work\, which was already considered transgressive at the time of its premiere. till today\, it is a symbol for the nexus of artistic radicality and cultural openness. \n  \nWith works by\nBéla Bartók\, Rebecca Saunders and Mirela Ivičević* (UA) \n*Composition commissioned by the Freiburg Theatre\, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, violoncello\nLukas Nowok\, sound design \nPHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA FREIBURG \nAndré de Ridder\, Musical direction \n  \nTickets\navailable at Theater Freiburg. \n  \nIn cooperation \nwith the Freiburg Theatre \n  \nSupported by\nFriends of Ensemble Recherche e. SUMMARY:Ensemble-Akademie Opening Concert
DESCRIPTION:Opening concert of the Academy week with Ensemble Recherche and Freiburger Barockorchester \nThe Academy-Week is the event at the heart of the Ensemble Academy Freiburg. This year\, it takes place from 7th to 12th of September. \nSurpassing the co-existence of different styles and periods\, this program aims to give participants a thorough understanding of early and contemporary music. Since mutual artistic inspiration is absolutely vital to this endeavour\, we are convinced participants will benefit greatly from sharing their experiences with different performance techniques and broadening their horizon by learning new approaches. What we hope to achieve with Academy-Week is to give participants the opportunity to learn specific skills for use in specialised ensembles and to simply come together in their joy of making music. \n  \nWith works by\nCarola Bauckholt\, Taeho Kim\, Clara Iannotta \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, violoncello \n  \nTickets\navailable at reservix.de and at the box office. \n  \nMore information here: ensemble-akademie.de

SUMMARY:KNOTENPUNKTE - ABO 1
DESCRIPTION:“The fictitious ‘Zentrale für Mobilitätsforschung’ (Center for Mobility Research) in Freiburg marks its 70th anniversary with a new name: the ‘Zentrale für Mobilitätsfragen’ (ZfMf – Center for Questions on Mobility). With its rebranding\, the center signals its interest in engagement with the city’s public and makes scholarly content\, such as mobility data\, environmental issues\, developmental history and urban planning strategies more accessible. Central to this reorientation is the launch of the online radio station mobile.fm. More than a source of information\, it creates a new sense of community: through hotlines\, studio guests and interactive formats\, listeners become participants. The station is run by the ZfMf’s own staff\, who are gradually finding their footing in this new role.” \nThe live radio play KNOTENPUNKTE by Clemens K. Thomas (music) and Friedemann Dupelius (text) brings this dynamic to the stage here at the Ensemblehaus. The musicians of Ensemble Recherche embody the ‘machinery’ of the bustling Centre – a sonic engine room suspended between precise bureaucracy and frenetic energy\, in which institutional and media transformation become audible. \nFor alongside the mobility transition\, two further upheavals are at play: the Centre comes under increasing political pressure and risks losing its funding – emblematic of many cultural and socio-political decisions currently being made across Germany and Europe. And with the so-called ‘Acoustic Turn’\, sound moves to the centre of perception – as a countermovement to a visually dominated modernity\, in which acoustic experiences increasingly shape our everyday lives\, our memory and our sense of orientation. \nWith the ‘Centre for Mobility Questions’\, the Ensemblehaus takes on a new function: the cycle paths and tram lines that normally simply pass by the building now converge– for a fictitious duration – at a place where experimental sounds are used to reflect on contemporary transport policy. \n  \nWith works by \nClemens K. SUMMARY:JAG GÅR PÅ SOL - A Farewell Concert for Åsa - ABO 2
DESCRIPTION:Our ensemble also encounters TIPPING POINTS – for example\, when a member leaves. Such a moment lies ahead: at the end of 2026\, our cellist Åsa Åkerberg will be leaving the ensemble. For over two decades she has decisively shaped the ensemble’s sound and collaborative spirit – her departure is a significant change for all of us. \nJAG GÅR PÅ SOL makes Åsa Åkerberg’s longstanding influence audible while opening space for new impulses. At the centre is a commissioned work by Ivo Nilsson\, complemented by five miniatures by Carola Bauckholt\, Ramon Lazkano\, Kristine Tjøgersen\, Séverine Ballon and Ricardo Eizirik\, each placing the cello in the foreground. The title comes from Edith Södergran’s poem Triumf att finnas till…/Triumph of Existing and translates as: I walk on suns. We wish for Åsa that her spirit of “Walking on Sunshine” never leaves her! \n  \nWith works by \nÅsa Åkerberg\, Séverin Ballon\, Carola Bauckholt\, Ricardo Eizirik\, Ramon Lazkano\, Ivo Nilsson\, Kristine Tjøgersen \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE \nAnja Clift\, Flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, Oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, Clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, Piano\nChristian Dierstein\, Percussion\nAdam Woodward\, Violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, Viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, Cello\nLukas Nowok\, Sound Design \n  \nTickets \navailable at reservix.de and at the box office. \nTo purchase a subscription\, please click here. \n  \nSupported by\nKonstnärsnämnden\, Freunde des Ensemble Recherche e.V.

SUMMARY:REINGELAUSCHT - REINGESCHAUT - ABO 3
DESCRIPTION:Our concept of music does not end at the ear. Sound emerges in the interplay of perception\, gesture\, image\, and imagination – what we see shapes what we hear\, and vice versa. \nAfter our first REINGELAUSCHT concert last season we now shift our focus towards the visual. When does something tip from the visual into the sonic? When does a sign turn into sound? For centuries\, composers have explored expanded forms of notation – not as illustration\, but as an independent musical practice. \nIn REINGELAUSCHT – REINGESCHAUT\, we encounter four such approaches. The starting point is Treatise by Cornelius Cardew – a key work of graphic notation. Dots\, circles\, and lines structure the score without fixing it. Send us your interpretation of Cardew’s score printed on pages 14/15\, and experience how we interpret it in concert! Beltrán González’ Every Fragment a Fragment is based on East German family holiday slides\, texts and media. Through live manipulation of archival images\, private memories are transformed into shifting landscapes of speculation\, distortion\, and poetic reconstruction. In Leaves in Marble\, Elena Rykova develops her own fragile notational system. Between traditional notation and drawn gesture\, a space emerges in which musical imagination is not fixed\, but in motion. In Micrography\, Macri Cáceres goes further: the performers wear the score itself on their bodies. Inspired by historical textiles\, the visual is translated into performance. Colour becomes sound\, density becomes texture\, emptiness becomes silence. \nJoin us in exploring the connections between the visual and the acoustic\, develop your own graphic scores – and experience their immediate musical realization. Here music emerges at the thresholds: where an image tips and morphs\, where a sign becomes uncertain\, and where sound begins. \n  \nWith works by \nCornelius Cardew\, Beltrán González\, Macri Cáceres\, Elena Rykova \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE \nAnja Clift\, Flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, Oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, Clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, Piano\nChristian Dierstein\, Percussion\nAdam Woodward\, Violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, Viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, Cello\nLukas Nowok\, Sound Design \n  \nTickets \navailable at reservix.de and at the box office. \nTo purchase a subscription\, please click here. \n  \nSupported by\nFreunde des Ensemble Recherche e.V.

SUMMARY:FUTURE FOREST - ABO 4
DESCRIPTION:Our forest rustles and chirps\, babbles and drips – and yet most of its sounds elude the human ear. Composer Kirsten Reese and biologist and ecoacoustician Dr. Sandra Müller of the University of Freiburg have listened more closely: with hydrophones in streams\, ground sensors in the soil\, and specialist microphones at tree trunks. Over months and years\, recorders in research zones in the Black Forest\, the Solling and the Schorfheide have captured a minute of sound for every ten minutes that passed – a long-term acoustic memory of the landscape\, that extends far beyond what humans can perceive. \nBut this memory is changing. Ecoacoustics reveal aurally what measurements alone cannot show: how an ecosystem sounds when it comes under pressure – and when it tips. Between wild nature and managed forestry\, the forest does not exist as a stable state but a process with thresholds that can only be recognised as such in hindsight. When does a forest cease being wilderness and instead become a mere resource? The archive of re-cordings makes this audible: not the dramatic rupture\, but the quiet shift – that moment when something has changed beyond return. \nWith Ensemble Recherche\, this material was developed into a spatial composition in twelve scenes. Pitches and rhythms were extracted from the recordings\, research data sonified\, sound gestures imitated in sessions with the musicians – multiple processes of translation that make the inaudible heard. The ensemble musicians found their own nature-inflected modes of expression: creaturely voices that exist between imitation and invention. Art and science ask the same questions: what does the forest mean to us? Can we learn from its resilience? Do we only start listening\, when it is too late? \n  \nWith music by \nKirsten Reese \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE \nAnja Clift\, Flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, Oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, Clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, Piano\nChristian Dierstein\, Percussion\nAdam Woodward\, Violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, Viola\nN.N.\, Cello\nLukas Nowok\, Sound Design \n  \nTickets \nTickets can be purchased through E-Werk and at the box office. \nTo purchase a subscription\, please click here. \n  \nCo-operation with E-WERK Freiburg \n \n  \nSupported by\nFreunde des Ensemble Recherche e.V.

SUMMARY:LIVING WATERS\, VITAL SONG - An Orchestral Concert - ABO 5
DESCRIPTION:Time is often imagined as a river flowing from past through present into future. But in the languages of the Yolŋu\, the indigenous people of Arnhem Land in northern Australia\, a fourth tense exists: a grammatical form in which the three time divisions do not succeed but fold into one another.A time that does not pass\, but persists – fundamentally contradicting the Western notion of beginning\, middle and end. \nIt is this fourth tense that the composer LizaLim adopts as the central idea for a special project. Three ensembles from Freiburg come together – the Philharmonic Orchestra Freiburg\, the Freiburger Barockorchester and Ensemble Recherche – each embodying a distinct layer of time: symphonic present\, baroque past\, contemporary future. In their interplay\, something emerges that none of the three could bring about alone: a non-linear time that belongs to dream\, poetry\, and music. \nHere\, another perspective on the tipping points of our season emerges. Western thinking is shaped by the “point of no return” the mo-ment from which a development becomes irreversible. The Yolŋu conception of time\, by contrast\, never lets the past fully disappear – it remains active and present. This softness of time is not naivety\, but a different form of resilience: the idea that healing and transformation stay possible within time. \nTo this monumental project\, the Philharmonic responds with Gustav Mahler’s SymphonyNo. 1\, “Titan” – equally monumental\, and a clear turning point in music history. With this concert\, chief conductor André de Ridder bids farewell to Freiburg. As a tireless advocate of contemporary music and a close friend of Ensemble Recherche\, we extend our heartfelt thanks to him. We are certain that our paths will cross many more times as he embarks on the next chapters of his journey. \n  \nWith works by \nLiza Lim*\, Gustav Mahler \n*Composition commission by Theater Freiburg\, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung \n \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE \nAnja Clift\, Flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, Oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, Clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, Piano\nChristian Dierstein\, Percussion\nAdam Woodward\, Violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, Viola\nN.N.\, Cello\nLukas Nowok\, Sound Design \n  \nWith \nPhilharmonic Orchestra Freiburg \nFreiburger Barockorchester \nAndré de Ridder – Conductor \n  \nTickets \nTickets can be purchased through Theater Freiburg and at the box office. \nTo purchase a subscription\, please click here.
