SUMMARY:ABO 1 - Kunst/Zukunft
DESCRIPTION:Music and its meaning in the age of AI \nWhat is the difference between a work of art created by a human and one generated by AI? Recent advances in machine learning have made it objectively impossible\, in many settings\, to distinguish between human- and AI-authored images\, texts\, and even music. However\, knowledge that an artwork was created using AI inevitably nuances our relationship with it\, making us inclined to perceive a lack of originality and emotional depth\, an incoherent structure… In short\, we are primed to seek evidence that confirms what we intuitively expect: that an algorithm is not capable of creating art that can have a genuine emotional impact on us. \nWhat then does it mean if we are moved by a work of art that was not derived from a lived human experience? If it is no longer possible to recognise the hand of Artificial Intelligence\, does provenance matter anymore? These questions open the door for debate about the fundamental nature of art and creativity. \nOur “Kunst/Zukunft” programme comprises works of music that were composed entirely\, in part or not at all using AI. Treating this concert as a perceptual “experiment”\, we provide no further information\, instead leaving it to you\, the listener\, to ponder the provenance of the sounds you are hearing\, to decide for yourself wherein lies the meaning and the beauty… \n  \nWith works from\nMalte Giesen\, Jennifer Walshe\, Joanna Bailie\, Justina Repečkaité\, Şahin Kureta\, Yuri Demetz (UA) und Alfran García (UA) \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, violoncello\nLukas Nowok\, sound design \nChristie Finn\, soprano \n  \nTickets\navailable at reservix.de\, Badische Zeitung Ticketservice and at the box office. \n  \nA cooperation \nbetween Ensemble Recherche and the Freunde of the Ensemble Recherche e.V. \n  \nThis project is part of a broad effort by Ensemble Recherche in its 2024/25 season (“What is Real/What is Not”) to engage in discussion about Artificial Intelligence and the impact it will have on Art and Creativity.

SUMMARY:For Melise - Farewell concert for Melise Mellinger
DESCRIPTION:A truly exceptional talent with an unwavering passion for new music\, but also a personality of profound sincerity\, warmth and wit\, violinist Melise Mellinger has been a cornerstone of Recherche since the ensemble’s creation in 1985. In this regard\, the contribution that she has made to the culture of contemporary music is almost beyond compare – indeed\, it is hard to imagine anyone engaged in our field who hasn’t heard her perform\, if not in concert then through the countless recordings – many of which are now seen as definitive versions – on which she appears. But alas\, at the conclusion of our 23/24 season\, Melise\, the last remaining founding member of Recherche\, will take her leave from the ensemble. \nIn this farewell concert\, we will try our best to let the focus be not on the sadness of parting ways but rather on celebrating forty years of exceptional music-making by one of the greats in our milieu. \nThe programme will comprise a variety of styles\, including new works composed especially for the occasion. \n  \n\nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE \nMelise Mellinger\, violin

SUMMARY:ABO 5: Performing the Archive
DESCRIPTION:A deconstruction of the musical heritage \nEnsemble Recherche and the SWR Experimental Studio have long and illustrious histories. But as L.P. Hartley wrote\, “the past is a foreign country; they do things differently there”. In recent years\, Ensemble Recherche has become increasingly engaged in the broader trend of questioning the meaning\, relevance and potential burden of the heritage and structures that underpin our activities as performers and producers of contemporary music. \nIn Performing the Archive\, Ensemble Recherche\, together with the SWR ExperimentalStudio\, presents a multimedia performance based on the deconstruction of historically significant repertoire. Far from simply expressing a post-modernist disdain for history\, this endeavour is intended to be an intellectually honest response to the ideological evolution that has taken place in the fields of sociology\, contemporary art and music criticism over the past four decades. Students of composition from the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and the Musik-Akademie Basel were tasked with fragmenting and reassembling works by Stockhausen\, Boulez\, Ferneyhough\, Rihm and others in a framework that seeks to offer a new perspective on the legacies of major musical and cultural institutions in Germany. At the core of this project are the questions: What does it mean to alter a masterpiece? Is it necessarily an act of provocation or is it potentially constructive\, useful\, beneficial\, even necessary? Is it possible to reconcile a work of art from the past with the values and norms of today? \n  \n\n\nWith works by\nDakota Wayne\, Dina Ahmadi-Jooghi\, Doyoon Yoon\, Errikos Sidiropoulos\, Valeriya Vinogradova and Vili Polajnar \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nMelise Mellinger\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Akerberg\, violoncello\nLukas Nowok\, sound direction \nTickets via: reservix.de \n\n\n\n\nIn cooperation with SWR Experimentalstudio\, Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and Hochschule für Musik Basel.

SUMMARY:ABO 4: Other Histories
DESCRIPTION:Music and history\, in other words \nHistory – in the sense of a society’s collective memory and understanding of the past – is constructed based on decisions made by older generations about what is worth preserving (in the form of texts\, images\, icons\, monuments…) and what is not. The authors of these decisions (politicians\, archivists\, benefactors)\, who are subject to the cultural forces of their time and traditionally to the obligation – implicit or explicit – to advance the metanarratives of the powerful\, therefore act as the curators of the past\, with the power to embellish and exalt\, but also to misrepresent and delete. \nIn Europe\, history is largely perceived as a landscape that is punctuated with periods of political\, cultural and institutional upheaval\, conflict and resolution. Our system for the preservation of knowledge is\, however\, poorly-suited for conserving aspects which exist outside of these spheres: the communal\, the experiential\, the feminine. History as we know it is therefore only one of many discourses about the world. \nIn our Other Histories project\, three composers with vastly different backgrounds and creative outlooks present their creative reflections on the history of histories\, on the contemporary tendency to challenge accepted wisdom\, and on new approaches to interacting with the records of the past. \n  \nWith works by\nMonthati Masebe\, Sara Stevanović and AJ Villanueva \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Akerberg\, violoncello\nLukas Nowok\, sound direction \n  \nTickets available at www.reservix.de\, Badische Zeitung Ticketservice and at the box office. \n  \nWith the support of the International Coproduction Fund of the Goethe-Institut e.V..

SUMMARY:Enno Poppe @Festival Acht Brücken Köln
DESCRIPTION:A story many years in the making: Ensemble Recherche is overjoyed to present the world premiere of a large-scale work for seven performers by Enno Poppe (co-commissioned by Ensembles Cikada (Norway) and Explore (UK)) alongside premieres by Taiwanese composer and laureate of the Internationaler Acht Brücken Kompositionswettbewerb Po-Chien Liu as well as the iranian composer Farzia Fallah. In describing his work-in-progress\, Poppe wrote the following: \n“I feel the need is to try something different in each piece. After having written some large-scale works\, some of which are very loud and dense\, I first wrote numerous miniatures to escape from large-scale forms and focus on the moment. Earlier chamber music works are particularly wild and intense; I made them so in order to endow the small instrumentations with a special energy. This new chamber music piece\, on the other hand\, is meant to be delicate and expansive. I start with very little\, the fragments of a melody\, tiny elements that are very similar to each other. From these germ cells\, a dense network of relationships emerges\, a jungle\, a dream. The piece is always on the threshold between order and disorder. It sings\, it waits.” \n  \n\nWith works by\nEnno Poppe\, Po-Chien Liu and Farzia Fallah \n  \n\n\n\nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, violoncello \n

SUMMARY:ABO 3: Six memos from the Last Millennium
DESCRIPTION:Resonance of the past \nSix memos for the next millennium was the intended title of a Harvard University lecture series by Italo Calvino. The Italian writer and literary theorist died in 1985 having only completed his notes for five of the six lectures; this material was subsequently compiled and published as a book in 1988 under the author’s original title. With Six Memos from the Last Millennium\, Israeli composer Yair Klartag shifts the perspective of Calvino‘s lectures – from proclamations to future generations to reflections on the past. Each of Klartag’s Six Memos – like the Calvino lectures – is dedicated to a single abstract concept. \nHowever\, while Calvino joyfully espouses the virtues of Lightness\, Quickness\, Exactitude\, Visibility and Multiplicity in literature (the sixth lecture was to be on Consistency)\, Klartag’s work is a suite of sonic illustrations of the notions of\, respectively\, Silencing\, Intervention\, Conservation\, Authenticity\, Individualism and Compression. The sentiment that these terms evoke when used alongside one another in reference to the previous century is not incidental – Six Memos from the Last Millennium is an attempt by the composer to express his disdain for the power structures of the twentieth century and his disillusionment with their persistence in the present. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith works by \nYair Klartag \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nMelise Mellinger\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Akerberg\, violoncello \n  \nTickets via reservix.de \n  \nSupported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.\nIn cooperation with the E-Werk Freiburg.

SUMMARY:Pierrot Populaire @Bielefeld
DESCRIPTION:The wine you drink with your eyes\,\nat night the moon pours down in waves. \nEnsemble Recherche and soprano Sarah Maria Sun invite you along on their search for the folk roots of Arnold Schönberg‘s Pierrot Lunaire – and for an exploration of the moon motif in classical music and pop culture. Intertwined with Schönberg‘s melodrama are arrangements of songs like “Fly me to the Moon”\, “Moon River” and “Dancing in the Moonlight”\, as well as perennial classical works like Debussy‘s “Clair de Lune” or Beethoven‘s “Moonlight Sonata”. So we roam together through nocturnal alleyways and enter into spiritual reverie – sometimes in the pale moonlight\, sometimes dazzlingly illuminated. \n  \n\n\nWith works by\nArnold Schönberg\, Max Kowalski (Arr. Johannes Schöllhorn)\, Henri Mancini (Arr. Clemens K. Thomas)\, Claude Debussy (Arr. Lucia Kilger)\, Mike Oldfield (Arr. Georgia Kumará)\, Ludwig van Beethoven (Arr. Kathrin Denner)\, Bart Howard (Arr. Eivind Buene) and Sherman Kelly (Arr. Matias Vestergård). \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, violoncello \nSarah Maria Sun\, soprano \n  \n\nMore information: frakzionen-festival.de \n\n\n\n\nSponsored by the Art Foundation NRW.

SUMMARY:ABO 1: Museum of a Future Past
DESCRIPTION:A walk through the world of extinct sounds \nIt is the year 2070 and Ensemble Recherche has just beamed its new season brochure directly to the brains of its subscribers via Neuro-telegram. Among the various goings-on there is a special invitation – the ensemble will open its “Archive of Extinct Sounds” to the public for the first time in a performance/exhibition co-curated by students in the Musicdesign programme at Trossingen Hochschule. The gentle crunching of footsteps in snow\, the squawks of swallows as they arrive in Europe after their seasonal crossing of the Sahara and Mediterranean\, the groans of an expanding glacier pushing against mountains of rock\, the bell of the San Marco Basilica in Venice… these sounds now exist only as memories – and as audio recordings\, neatly organised in historical archives. \n\n\n\n\nMuseum of a Future Past is a creative and critical reflection upon the soundscapes associated with things in our world whose existence is\, for better or worse\, under threat. It emphasises themes of climate change and the environmental and sociological upheavals associated with it\, but at the same time\, takes the optimistic view that new technologies will\, in the not-too-distant future\, relegate to the past the tools of industry\, transport and modern convenience that are having such a destructive effect on our planet. \n\n\n\n\nThe exhibitions in this imagined museum\, organised by category (anthropologic\, polar\, birdsongs\, etc.)\, will be animated by members of Ensemble Recherche. \n  \n\nWith works by\nBileg Sainburen\, Hanna Magdon\, Jakob Fros\, Jason Ullah\, Josef Häusel\, Leon Aviles Fucyman und Luka Knezevic \n\n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, violoncello \nSonja Schmid\, Christian Losert\, Project consulting\nJakob Boeckh\, Set Design \nAndreas Schmelas\, Webdesign \n  \nTickets available at www.reservix.de\, Badische Zeitung Ticketservice and at the box office. \n  \nThe museum is also online—upload your sounds at www.museum-of-a-future-past.com and help our collection grow! \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupported by the Aventis Foundation and the Rudolf Augstein Foundation. The three internationally renowned and specialised ensembles Freiburger Barockorchester\, Ensemble Recherche and Vox Luminis aim at connecting their main focus areas in old and new music and\, with their experience\, at enriching the work and performances of three Bach cantatas and chamber music reaching from baroque to contemporary music. The main focus of Vox Luminis in this course is J. S. Bach’s vocal music and excerpts from Florilegium Portense. \nBach300 Summer Class in ensemble practice of old and new music \nFrom 7th until 16th of August\, three Bach cantatas will be acquired upon other works with teachers from the three internationally renowned and specialised ensembles Ensemble Recherche\, Freiburger Barockorchester and Vox Luminis as part of the Bach300 Summer Class. \nBesides the coexistence of different styles and eras\, the focus will be on mutual artistic inspiration. The possibility for instrumentalists to take part in both the course of the Freiburger Barockorchester as well as Ensemble Recherche and to be able to attend the lessons of other participants is unique. \nThe number of spots for the Bach300 summer class is limited. SUMMARY:A SONG OF SALT AND WATER - staged family concert
DESCRIPTION:We find ourselves underwater: with composers Kristine Tjøgersen and Mads Emil Dreyer we dive into the sound of singing schools of fish and marvel at the colorful play of the cuttlefish. But as beautiful as this underwater world is\, it is also threatened: coral bleaching\, plastic waste\, overfishing\, extinction of species\, hearing-impaired porpoises…. \nTim Gordon\, a researcher of coral reefs\, reports from the Great Barrier Reef\, a coral reef off the coast of Australia: „Once there was color and life everywhere in this incredible landscape\, but now it resembles a graveyard. Not only has it become much quieter here\, but also the quality of the sounds has changed. The acoustic complexity is gone\, there‘s much less going on today – you can literally hear a dying riff.“ Changes caused by humans\, threatened ecosystems and complex nutritional systems that are out of balance… And yet the music manages to avoid an apocalyptic mood or hopelessness despite these serious themes. Rather\, her fine music sensitizes us to the beauty of the underwater world and touches us so strongly precisely because we become aware of what is in danger of being lost. \n  \n\nWith works by\nKristine Tjøgersen and Mads Emil Dreyer \n  \nFurther dates: \nSunday / 16.07.23\, 11 a.m.\nSunday / 16.07.23\, 4 p.m. \n17-19.07.23 Performance for school classes from Freiburg and the surrounding area \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE \nMiriam Götz\, Director\nChristine Löbbert\, inclusion counselling \n  \nSuitable for children from the age of 6\, with and without visual or hearing impairments. \nSupported within the framework of “Kunst trotz Abstand” of the MWK Baden-Württemberg.

SUMMARY:ABO 5 : Pierrot Populaire - a moon ride
DESCRIPTION:„The wine that one drinks with eyes / the moon pours down at night in waves.“\nThe first lines in Arnold Schoenberg‘s Pierrot lunaire lead the way: things go upward to the moon\, and inward into the soul brimming with emotion. The poems by Albert Giraud\, on which Schoenberg‘s melodrama is based\, paint fever- ish pictures of the soul. At one time\, one spoke of „moon addiction“ or\, like Giraud\, of „moon drunkenness.“ In the English word „lunatic\,“ one finds a link between the satellite and rapturous psychic states. „Pierrot Populaire“ is a search by Ensemble Recherche for traces of the popular roots of Schoenberg‘s Pierrot on the one hand\, and at the same time for the motif of the moon in pop culture. From Björk to queer director Bruce LaBruce\, Pierrot has been interpreted and reinterpreted. Pop songs like „Moon- light Shadow“ or „Moon River“ refer to the moon as well as popular works of classical music – think of the Moonlight Sonata or „Clair de Lune.“ The melancholy Pierrot himself is a legacy of popular culture: he comes from French and Italian fairground and street theaters and as a clown from the circus. In „Pierrot Populaire\,“ we roam nocturnal alleys and enter spiritual blackouts – sometimes pale\, sometimes glea- mingly illuminated by the moon. „And a spring tide floods / the silent horizon.“ \n  \n\n\n\nWith works by\nArnold Schönberg\, Ludwig van Beethoven\, Claude Debussy\, Max Kowalski\,\nKing Harvest\, Frank Sinatra\, Audrey Hepburn und Mike Oldfield \n  \nSarah Maria Sun\, Sopran \n  \nFoto: Thomas Hauck
