SUMMARY:ABO 1: Museum of a Future Past
DESCRIPTION:A walk through the world of extinct sounds \nIt is the year 2070 and Ensemble Recherche has just beamed its new season brochure directly to the brains of its subscribers via Neuro-telegram. Among the various goings-on there is a special invitation – the ensemble will open its “Archive of Extinct Sounds” to the public for the first time in a performance/exhibition co-curated by students in the Musicdesign programme at Trossingen Hochschule. The gentle crunching of footsteps in snow\, the squawks of swallows as they arrive in Europe after their seasonal crossing of the Sahara and Mediterranean\, the groans of an expanding glacier pushing against mountains of rock\, the bell of the San Marco Basilica in Venice… these sounds now exist only as memories – and as audio recordings\, neatly organised in historical archives. \n\n\n\n\nMuseum of a Future Past is a creative and critical reflection upon the soundscapes associated with things in our world whose existence is\, for better or worse\, under threat. It emphasises themes of climate change and the environmental and sociological upheavals associated with it\, but at the same time\, takes the optimistic view that new technologies will\, in the not-too-distant future\, relegate to the past the tools of industry\, transport and modern convenience that are having such a destructive effect on our planet. \n\n\n\n\nThe exhibitions in this imagined museum\, organised by category (anthropologic\, polar\, birdsongs\, etc.)\, will be animated by members of Ensemble Recherche. \n  \n\nWith works by\nBileg Sainburen\, Hanna Magdon\, Jakob Fros\, Jason Ullah\, Josef Häusel\, Leon Aviles Fucyman und Luka Knezevic \n\n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nAdam Woodward\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, violoncello \nSonja Schmid\, Christian Losert\, Project consulting\nJakob Boeckh\, Set Design \nAndreas Schmelas\, Webdesign \n  \nTickets available at www.reservix.de\, Badische Zeitung Ticketservice and at the box office. \n  \nThe museum is also online—upload your sounds at www.museum-of-a-future-past.com and help our collection grow! \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupported by the Aventis Foundation and the Rudolf Augstein Foundation. SUMMARY:Ensemble Recherche @Bach300 Summer Class
DESCRIPTION:In the special year “Bach300 – 300 years Bach in Leipzig”\, the Leipzig Bach Archive had invited the Baden-Württemberg ensemble academy from Freiburg and the Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis in order to host the one-off Bach300 Summer Class in Leipzig. The three internationally renowned and specialised ensembles Freiburger Barockorchester\, Ensemble Recherche and Vox Luminis aim at connecting their main focus areas in old and new music and\, with their experience\, at enriching the work and performances of three Bach cantatas and chamber music reaching from baroque to contemporary music. The main focus of Vox Luminis in this course is J. S. Bach’s vocal music and excerpts from Florilegium Portense. \nBach300 Summer Class in ensemble practice of old and new music \nFrom 7th until 16th of August\, three Bach cantatas will be acquired upon other works with teachers from the three internationally renowned and specialised ensembles Ensemble Recherche\, Freiburger Barockorchester and Vox Luminis as part of the Bach300 Summer Class. \nBesides the coexistence of different styles and eras\, the focus will be on mutual artistic inspiration. The possibility for instrumentalists to take part in both the course of the Freiburger Barockorchester as well as Ensemble Recherche and to be able to attend the lessons of other participants is unique. \nThe number of spots for the Bach300 summer class is limited. A decision on the admission to participate will be made based upon the artistic ability. The application deadline is 21st of May 2023. Applications are solely possible via muvac. \nMore information: muvac.com und bach300.de \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nAnja Clift\, flute\nMelise Mellinger\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer

SUMMARY:A SONG OF SALT AND WATER - staged family concert
DESCRIPTION:We find ourselves underwater: with composers Kristine Tjøgersen and Mads Emil Dreyer we dive into the sound of singing schools of fish and marvel at the colorful play of the cuttlefish. But as beautiful as this underwater world is\, it is also threatened: coral bleaching\, plastic waste\, overfishing\, extinction of species\, hearing-impaired porpoises…. \nTim Gordon\, a researcher of coral reefs\, reports from the Great Barrier Reef\, a coral reef off the coast of Australia: „Once there was color and life everywhere in this incredible landscape\, but now it resembles a graveyard. Not only has it become much quieter here\, but also the quality of the sounds has changed. The acoustic complexity is gone\, there‘s much less going on today – you can literally hear a dying riff.“ Changes caused by humans\, threatened ecosystems and complex nutritional systems that are out of balance… And yet the music manages to avoid an apocalyptic mood or hopelessness despite these serious themes. Rather\, her fine music sensitizes us to the beauty of the underwater world and touches us so strongly precisely because we become aware of what is in danger of being lost. \n  \n\nWith works by\nKristine Tjøgersen and Mads Emil Dreyer \n  \nFurther dates: \nSunday / 16.07.23\, 11 a.m.\nSunday / 16.07.23\, 4 p.m. \n17-19.07.23 Performance for school classes from Freiburg and the surrounding area \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE \nMiriam Götz\, Director\nChristine Löbbert\, inclusion counselling \n  \nSuitable for children from the age of 6\, with and without visual or hearing impairments. \nSupported within the framework of “Kunst trotz Abstand” of the MWK Baden-Württemberg.

SUMMARY:ABO 5 : Pierrot Populaire - a moon ride
DESCRIPTION:„The wine that one drinks with eyes / the moon pours down at night in waves.“\nThe first lines in Arnold Schoenberg‘s Pierrot lunaire lead the way: things go upward to the moon\, and inward into the soul brimming with emotion. The poems by Albert Giraud\, on which Schoenberg‘s melodrama is based\, paint fever- ish pictures of the soul. At one time\, one spoke of „moon addiction“ or\, like Giraud\, of „moon drunkenness.“ In the English word „lunatic\,“ one finds a link between the satellite and rapturous psychic states. „Pierrot Populaire“ is a search by Ensemble Recherche for traces of the popular roots of Schoenberg‘s Pierrot on the one hand\, and at the same time for the motif of the moon in pop culture. From Björk to queer director Bruce LaBruce\, Pierrot has been interpreted and reinterpreted. Pop songs like „Moon- light Shadow“ or „Moon River“ refer to the moon as well as popular works of classical music – think of the Moonlight Sonata or „Clair de Lune.“ The melancholy Pierrot himself is a legacy of popular culture: he comes from French and Italian fairground and street theaters and as a clown from the circus. In „Pierrot Populaire\,“ we roam nocturnal alleys and enter spiritual blackouts – sometimes pale\, sometimes glea- mingly illuminated by the moon. „And a spring tide floods / the silent horizon.“ \n  \n\n\n\nWith works by\nArnold Schönberg\, Ludwig van Beethoven\, Claude Debussy\, Max Kowalski\,\nKing Harvest\, Frank Sinatra\, Audrey Hepburn und Mike Oldfield \n  \nSarah Maria Sun\, Sopran \n  \nFoto: Thomas Hauck

SUMMARY:ABO 4: Creation / Extinction
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Haydn‘s Creation is a hymn of praise to the creation of the earth. His oratorio tells the biblical story of Genesis in joyful\, jubilant tonal language. 222 years and several summer heat waves later\, this music makes one rather contemplative. In a joint concert with the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra\, Ensemble Recherche places earthly beauty in the direct context of its threat. This is the subject of Extinction Events and Dawn Chorus by Liza Lim\, who artistically deals with ecological issues concerning the so-called Anthropocene – i.e.\, the current geological age\, which is significantly shaped by human influence on the earth. The ensemble piece is a 40-minute reflection on man‘s difficult relationship with the earth. Lim sets plastic islands in the sea to music\, puts the call of the extinct Hawaiian bird Kauai O‘o in the score\, and draws inspiration from the evening symphony of sea creatures on the Great Barrier Reef – which due to climate change and pollution contrasts as starkly in their sound today as Liza Lim does with Joseph Haydn. Extinction Events and Dawn Chorus is wondrous\, part angry\, part surreal. In a scenic concert\, conducted by Freiburg‘s new General Music Director André de Ridder\, it is possible to ponder what ecological heritage we would like to leave to future generations. \n  \nWith works by \nLiza Lim\, Joseph Haydn \n  \nAndré de Ridder\, musical conduction \nFreiburg Philharmonic Orchestra \n  \nIn cooperation with the Freiburg Theatre

SUMMARY:ABO 3: Helmut – Portrait of a friendship
DESCRIPTION:Despite all the dynamic changes that have marked Ensemble Recherche\, one person has almost always belonged to it: Helmut Lachenmann. With a twinkle in his eye\, the composer recently explained to our musicians the „tonlosoids“ he likes to use so much: sounds whose noisiness also subtly hides tones. While this idea is not in music dictionaries\, it can be found in Helmut‘s new string trio Mes Adieux. He wrote it for Recherche\, which had to wait exactly 29 years for its completion – yet another reason to celebrate the friendship between the ensemble and the now 86-year-old! \n„His music is stringent and in conversation he can be very serious\,“ our violinist Melise Mellinger says\, „but he is a very generous person\, very humanistic in his music – and he creates the most beautiful spoonerisms!“ This cheerful side is also evident in the Stuttgarter‘s private musical preferences. Melise recounts\, „When we were rehearsing his new trio in Freiburg\, he played whatever came to his mind on the piano. Suddenly the melody of ‚Marina\, Marina‘ rang out\, and we were both happily surprised that the other liked this Italian hit so much!“ Helmut also has a fondness for the film composer Ennio Morricone – Recherche pianist Klaus Steffes-Holländer acknowledges this with his own Morricone arrangement. On the other hand\, Helmut Lachenmann‘s Trio Fluido from 1968 is strictly structuralist. The Five Variations on a Theme by Franz Schubert\, which Helmut compares to a „souvenir from his youth“\, are separated from the fresh Mes Adieux by no less than 66 years. We are happy about the addition to the repertoire and see eye to eye with Melise: „We rave about the piece!“ \n  \nWith works by \nHelmut Lachenmann\, Ennio Morricone \nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, Editing \n  \nSupported by the Federal Commissioner of the BKM within the framework of NEUSTART KULTUR

SUMMARY:FREQUENZ FESTIVAL KIEL
DESCRIPTION:For the first time we play at Frequenz Festival Kiel and present a new version of Ricardo Eizirik‘s“Exercise in Metal n°1”. The piece is written for 4 performers and a music machine\, which significantly influences the sonic result: fragmented sounds and technological playfulness await us. Katharina Rosenberger‘s work “Atchafalaya (Remix)” was inspired by the American national park of the same name\, a wetland in the Missisippi Delta. SUMMARY:ABO 2: Spotted: Subsahara
DESCRIPTION:After centuries of Europe exporting its musical heritage all over the world\, the Eurocentric map is gradually being crumpled up. For example\, the idea of music as an autonomous product of the mind is a European one and does not always hold up in other contexts. The Nigerian composer Ayò Olúrántí describes that music with classical Western instruments is played in churches or at traditional celebrations in Nigeria due to a lack of concert halls. The social component comes more to the fore here and music is transformed from being a work into an activity – whether you practice it\, play it\, listen to it or dance to it. How would this work in Freiburg? Here\, Ghanaian musician\, performer\, and fashion designer STELOOLIVE will turn his ear to the sounds of the city in the spring\, record them and develop a piece with Ensemble Recherche. \nWhat does Germany sound like from a West African listening perspective? What happens when this time it‘s not „we“ who look at „the others\,“ but when the line of sight is reversed and contact with the eye and ear is established? The concert in the Jazzhaus revolves around such questions and presents\, in addition to STELOOLIVE\, five other musical viewpoints from Africa. One of them comes from Bongani Ndodana-Breen\, co-curator of the project „Postcolonial Recherche“ and one of the most important composers of contemporary music in South Africa. Monthati Zenzile Masebe\, like Ndodana-Breen also from South Africa\, works with music archives\, indigenous and classical instruments and with digital technology. Ayò Olúrántí incorporates the principles of Dùndún music of the Yorùbá in Nigeria into his compositions. \n  \nWith works by \nNjabolo Phungula\, Monthati Masebe\, Ayó Olúrántí\, Bongani Ndodana-Breen\, Tebogo Monnakgotla \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE \nBongani Ndodana-Breen\, co-curator\nSTELOOLIVE\, Sound-Artist\, DJ \n  \nIn cooperation with the Goethe-Institut \nThe concert will be recorded by Deutschlandfunk. \n

SUMMARY:SIDE-BY-SIDE KYIV
DESCRIPTION:Against all odds: the Erasmus exchange program between the Freiburg University of Music and the music academies in Kyiv will continue even in times of war. Shortly after the outbreak of the war\, students from Ukraine were able to continue their education in Freiburg. The exchange between the Freiburg and Kyiv instrumental and composition classes also continues. Ensemble Recherche would like to contribute to this inner-European relationship and will perform pieces by composition students from Kyiv and Freiburg in a concert. For this purpose\, it will form a mixed „side-by-side“ ensemble together with musicians from the Freiburg University of Music\, conducted by Friederike Scheuchen. To that end\, Ensemble Recherche was eager to also perform music by Ukrainian composer and professor Alla Zagaykevych. Since the 1990s\, she has played a major role in shaping Ukrainian contemporary music education and has\, among other things\, founded a university studio for electronic music in Kyiv. \n  \nWith works by \nAlla Zagaykevich\, Alexander Grebtschenko\, Johannes Schöllhorn and students from the Kyiv and Freiburg University of Music \n  \nIn cooperation with the Institute for New Music of the Freiburg University of Music in the framework of the ERASMUS+ programme in cooperation with the National Academy of Music of Ukraine

SUMMARY:POSTCOLONIAL RECHERCHE
DESCRIPTION:How contemporary is music in the 21st century\, if it continues to be so eurocentric? in a cooperation with the Goethe-institut\, the ensemble recherche invited composers from developing countries to an artistic exchange. With young composers from Colombia\, Iran\, Ukraine\, Argentina\, Taiwan\, Korea and Germany\, we present plural perspectives. \nFilipino composer AJ Villanueva is fellow of the project. He reflects: \nContemporary music in the Philippines is centered around academic institutions that study western classical music. The lack of public knowledge and interest of contemporary music in the Philippines has limited the performance\, funding\, even its study in other higher institutions of learning. With this\, it is an objective to further the performance of contemporary music through composition with local performances and performers in mind which is always a great opportunity. On the other hand\, performances outside the Philippines are opportunities to work with musicians\, opening exchanges in musical and cultural knowledge. My collaboration with Ensemble Recherche allowed for exchanges in musical and technical possibilities\, as well as an exploration of divergences in culture not only with the musicians but with co-composer fellows who are part of the “Postcolonial Recherche” program. As a Filipino composer of contemporary music\, I continuously explore and question my Filipino tradition as I use a language that is Western in origin\, as well as exploring post-modernity in contemporary music while looking back at my historical roots as a Filipino. The “Postcolonial Recherche” program is indeed a pathway into formulating more questions and ideas while discovering musical possibilities of those ideas in an exciting collaboration with Ensemble Recherche. \n  \nWith premieres of works by \nPatricia Martínez\, Camilo Mendez\, Rojin Monibi\, Adrian Mocanu\, Joey Tan\, So-Jeong Yoo\, Doyoon Yoon und Elisabeth Fußeder \n  \nENSEMBLE RECHERCHE\nLisa Meignin\, flute (as a guest)\nEduardo Olloqui\, oboe\nShizuyo Oka\, clarinet\nKlaus Steffes-Holländer\, piano\nChristian Dierstein\, percussion\nMelise Mellinger\, violin\nSofia von Atzingen\, viola\nÅsa Åkerberg\, cello \nBongani Ndodana-Breen\, curator \n  \nSupported by the BKM within the framework of Neustart Kultur\, Alfred Töpfer Stiftung. \nIn cooperation with the Goethe-Institut\, Deutschlandfunk \nBroadcast date: 05.11.2022\, 22:05\, Deutschlandfunk
