DESCRIPTION:Against all odds: the Erasmus exchange program between the Freiburg University of Music and the music academies in Kyiv will continue even in times of war. Shortly after the outbreak of the war\, students from Ukraine were able to continue their education in Freiburg. The exchange between the Freiburg and Kyiv instrumental and composition classes also continues. Ensemble Recherche would like to contribute to this inner-European relationship and will perform pieces by composition students from Kyiv and Freiburg in a concert. For this purpose\, it will form a mixed „side-by-side“ ensemble together with musicians from the Freiburg University of Music\, conducted by Friederike Scheuchen. To that end\, Ensemble Recherche was eager to also perform music by Ukrainian composer and professor Alla Zagaykevych. Since the 1990s\, she has played a major role in shaping Ukrainian contemporary music education and has\, among other things\, founded a university studio for electronic music in Kyiv. \n  \nWith works by \nAlla Zagaykevich\, Alexander Grebtschenko\, Johannes Schöllhorn and students from the Kyiv and Freiburg University of Music \n  \nIn cooperation with the Institute for New Music of the Freiburg University of Music in the framework of the ERASMUS+ programme in cooperation with the National Academy of Music of Ukraine

SUMMARY:POSTCOLONIAL RECHERCHE
DESCRIPTION:How contemporary is music in the 21st century\, if it continues to be so eurocentric? in a cooperation with the Goethe-institut\, the ensemble recherche invited composers from developing countries to an artistic exchange. With young composers from Colombia\, Iran\, Ukraine\, Argentina\, Taiwan\, Korea and Germany\, we present plural perspectives. \nFilipino composer AJ Villanueva is fellow of the project. He reflects: \nContemporary music in the Philippines is centered around academic institutions that study western classical music. The lack of public knowledge and interest of contemporary music in the Philippines has limited the performance\, funding\, even its study in other higher institutions of learning. With this\, it is an objective to further the performance of contemporary music through composition with local performances and performers in mind which is always a great opportunity. On the other hand\, performances outside the Philippines are opportunities to work with musicians\, opening exchanges in musical and cultural knowledge. My collaboration with Ensemble Recherche allowed for exchanges in musical and technical possibilities\, as well as an exploration of divergences in culture not only with the musicians but with co-composer fellows who are part of the “Postcolonial Recherche” program. As a Filipino composer of contemporary music\, I continuously explore and question my Filipino tradition as I use a language that is Western in origin\, as well as exploring post-modernity in contemporary music while looking back at my historical roots as a Filipino. In “Poética del Camino”\, the Spanish composer sends Ensemble Recherche and the Neue Vocalsolisten on winding paths between isolation and coming together. The text is based on Wilhelm Müller’s cycle of poems “Winterreise”. The path is a search and at the same time: a one-way road. Or\, as Müller puts it: “A road must I walk\, / By which no one has yet returned.” Fragments from “Winterreise” are combined with lines from Hermann Hesse and two Spanish poets whose lives are five centuries apart: Jorge Manrique and Antonio Machado. They all understand the path as a metaphor for transition\, transience\, becoming. In a mixture of lecture-performance\, concert and film premiere\, the musicians present their new mission: anyone can be Ensemble Recherche\, whether in Freiburg\, Berlin\, Hong Kong or… Zeitz. Playfully\, the rules of new music and ensemble work are questioned. How can an ensemble like Recherche exist in the 21st century – an ensemble that interprets works by composers at the highest technical level like no other? Tradition vs. innovation\, concert vs. new formats. The evening culminates in the presentation of a documentary in which Recherche musicians\, full of visions\, travel as missionaries – or at the least\, artistic community workers – to the East German city of Zeitz. DESCRIPTION:It was in the last century\, Recherche violinist Melise Mellinger recounts\, when her first encounter with Wolfgang Rihm took place. “He came to our then rehearsal room\, and I was deeply impressed by this personality.” Over time\, a friendly and very fruitful artistic relationship grew between the composer\, who celebrates his 70th birthday in 2022\, and Ensemble Recherche. “He always had great confidence in us\, never criticized much\, and always just emphasized what would be important to him and his ear\,” says Melise Mellinger regarding the collaborations that resulted in numerous performances and several CD recordings. Recherche congratulates the Karlsruhe composer with two concerts: Kolchis\, Pol and Blick auf Kolchis will be performed together with the Institute for New Music of the Freiburg University of Music. Rihm students Rebecca Saunders\, Markus Hechtle and Kathrin Denner and a world premiere by Freiburg student Da Eun Jun round off the program. The second concert is dedicated to Rihm’s chamber music\, more precisely: “Chiffre IV”\, “von weit”\, “Über die Linie IV” and the duo “Antlitz” for piano and violin. Melise Mellingers comments\, “This is one of our classics – a very beautiful\, very sensual piece that underscores the diversity in Rihm’s complex oeuvre.”
