SUMMARY:Oh\, I see
DESCRIPTION:The Freiburg composer Carola Bauckholt has a pair of eyes projected onto two balloons. Through these external movements we can draw conclusions about internal processes. The sounds of the clarinet\, cello and piano complement the eyes so that we can perceive a kind of composite artificial face in this construct of images and sounds. Thus\, this is centrally about perception and cognitive processes. The composer writes: “I am again and again fascinated by our brain\, especially by the logic of our dreams. I have the impression that art\, especially music\, comes closest to the processes that take place in our brain.” \n  \nMirela Ivičević also deals with inner life and depicts a transformation in miniature form as a “baby”. Her work “Baby Magnify/Lilith’s New Toy” traces the alchemical transformation called “Opus magnum”\, in which the philosopher’s stone is created from a starting material. According to Carl Jung\, this corresponds to the process of transformation of the psyche: a phase of chaos followed by the burning away of impurity\, enlightenment and finally the unification of the finite with the infinite. And one cannot expect much more from a piece of seven minutes duration…

SUMMARY:BLODHOV - The Diary of One Who Disappeared
DESCRIPTION:Displacement\, escape\, deportation\, death—the inhumane burdens that people far from their homes must fight against\, people who have been violently torn from their surroundings. These burdens are immense—and timeless. We come across descriptions of them already in mythological prehistoric times. An Icelandic legend tells of the abduction of the giantess Gerðdur by the god Freyr on his horse Blodhov. The expressive monodrama for mezzo-soprano is named after the vehicle of the capture: “Blodhov” (Bloodhooves)\, an enormous black horse. The Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist combines the sound worlds of ensemble recherche and the Swedish folk singer Lena Willemark in a fascinating way. \nWith “The Diary of One Who Disappeared” by Leoš Janáček\, the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra juxtaposes with no less a topical work: Here\, too\, a person disappears from the scene by being torn out of his or her previous environment. Janáček’s “Diary”\, with the instrumentation of Johannes Schöllhorn\, is not understood in this context as a romantic love story\, but as a socio-political piece about our state of shock due to the “refugee crisis” beginning in 2015 at the latest: The Philharmonic Orchestra and ensemble recherche perform a chamber music evening against forgetting—and with the help of haunting music at least for a moment try to give the victims of violence and crime a voice. \nHeiko Voss \n  \n  \n  \nIn cooperation with Theater Freiburg. \nLena Willemark\, voice (Blodhov) \nSvante Grogarn\, stage (Blodhov) \nIrina Jae Eun Park\, soprano; Inga Schäfer\, mezzo-soprano (The Diary of One Who Disappeared) \nFreiburg Philharmonic Orchestra

SUMMARY:ECLAT Concert 10 – Live Stream
DESCRIPTION:“…strange sounds from a strange\, disjointed year…”: Ricardo Eizirik reflects in his work Placeholder on the difficulty of a creatively productive “carry on” that he has felt in the past year. Matias Vestergard describes a “pathological amnesic state that can last for several months\, during which a person suffers from memory loss\, often starts a new life\, and after recovery remembers nothing from the amnesic phase.” For Anda Kryeziu\, on the other hand\, the gloomy midwinter in the hardest time of the pandemic is an occasion to travel “back to the foundations” together with ensemble recherche. There she creates a playground for herself and the musicians\, a playfulness in which the identities of the instruments are detached from their idiom by imitating each other’s characteristics and physically connecting them. Together\, they create a hybrid sound result\, a listening theatre\, as it were\, which – given a good pair of headphones – reveals a sound universe to us. \n  \nClick here to learn more about the concert \nTickets for the live stream \nECLAT Festival

SUMMARY:Spotted:HONGKONG
DESCRIPTION:This concert program was curated by the Hong Kong-Chinese composer Charles Kwong. Artistic Manager Clemens K. Thomas spoke with Charles Kwong about Hong Kong\, its new music scene and the variety of composers there. \n  \nDear Charles\, you were born in Hong Kong in 1985 and grew up there but spent a large part of your studies in England. In what way is your biography typical for a Hong Kong-Chinese composer of your generation? \nWe do\, in fact\, have a strong tendency to choose English speaking countries (namely the U.K.\, the U.S.\, Canada and Australia) as destinations for studying abroad. However\, this is not only the case with composers but a tendency in many professions and is largely due to our history with the British and the convenience of being proficient in English. \n  \n  \nNevertheless\, you decided to return to Hong Kong after your studies. What is so special about this city? \nI can talk endlessly about what makes my hometown special. But I would like to highlight one thing that deserves more discussion\, especially in a musical context\, and that is the coloniality and decoloniality that Hong Kong experienced. While discourse on decoloniality might seem only to apply to ex-colonies\, I find many of its ideas acutely address many of the crises that currently confront global society as a whole. This is because many of these challenges are in fact the very problems of late modernity. Such a perspective has helped me understand more of certain aspects in the art and culture of my hometown\, which might otherwise seem peculiar or even bizarre to outsiders. \n  \n  \nIn the series “Spotted:” we look for local characteristics in a global present. Is there such a thing as a Hong Kong-Chinese musical identity? And how did you proceed with the program selection? \nArt is inseparable from the personal history and experiences of an artist. On a personal level\, my history with Hong Kong certainly plays a role in my musical identity. But this musical identity shouldn’t be the same narrative of musical nationalism as found in previous centuries because geographical differences nowadays should no longer limit what musical cultures and influences a composer is exposed to. I think it is very difficult nowadays to generalize about the musical styles or characteristics of a certain group of composers by their geographical origin or ethnicity. To me\, the Hong Kong musical identity should not be a collection of musical traits but the visions of how each of us regard and situate our art in response to the opportunities and challenges we face in this city. \n  \nIn the program\, I don’t attempt to provide an overview of “Hong Kong contemporary music” (because it is impossible). I feature several other young composers of my generation who in my opinion have high artistic merit and have a different depth of engagement with Hong Kong in their life stories. Instead of conjuring a unified musical impression of Hong Kong\, I hope the program presents distinctive individuals who share a similar origin. Therefore\, no sweet-and-sour pentatonicism nor “Oriental texture” is guaranteed and Hong Kong can be heard in many different imaginative ways. \n  \nIn cooperation with PROJECT21st. \nReinhold Braig\, sound direction \n  \nThe concert will be recorded by Deutschlandfunk Kultur \n

SUMMARY:Alberto Posadas: Poética del camino (premiere)
DESCRIPTION:From the lonely paths of the bass clarinet\, this new cycle by Alberto Posadas leads into a dense network of wandering sounds. The movements of the voices and instruments make spatial experiences possible that are reminiscent of our moving about.  With the Poética del camino Alberto Posadas creates a treatise\, both spiritual and directly sensual\, on changes\, transitions\, the old motif of pacing and wandering\, right down to final existential questions. \n  \nWith: Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart; Markus Schwind\, trumpet; Andrew Digby\, trombone\nCommissioned by ensemble recherche\, the Neue Vocalsolisten and the WDR\, financed by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

SUMMARY:REMIX
DESCRIPTION:Remix culture has become an integral part of the present and also has had a strong influence on the contemporary music scene. Although only recognized as an art form in its own right since the late 1980s\, the idea of the remix has been an essential part of European culture for much longer: Renaissance as a cultural technique. \nIn the first subscription concert\, we hear the old with new ears: In his Gesualdo arrangement “Le voci sottovetro”\, Salvatore Sciarrino handles vocal polyphony from the 16th century with the spirit of modernity. Genoël von Lilienstern works with the sounds of the legendary YAMAHA DX7\, a revolutionary digital synthesizer from 1983. In Brigitta Muntendorf’s “keep quiet and dance”\, every performance is an independent version of an open work (one can hardly speak of “original” here)\, as the singer is asked to let her own cultural background flow into the shaping of her vocal part. And finally\, we present the world premiere of Thomas Meadowcroft’s “More Beautiful Discourse” for string trio and organ—not just any organ\, but a Hammond organ. \n“Things going round” inspired the composer: “Leslie” loudspeakers rotating around themselves\, producing the sound typical of a Hammond and jazz harmonies in various inversions. “Things going round” could also be a fitting motto for this evening: In an attempt to move time a little forward\, we somehow move in a circle—and no longer know if we hear the old in a new way or\, in contrast\, the new suddenly looks old… \n  \nJulienne Mbodjé\, mezzo-soprano \nLucia Kilger\, sound direction \nThe concert will be recorded by SWR.

September 2020 stattfindet. \n
