Njabulo Phungula

Njabulo Phungula (b. 1993) is a composer from Durban, South Africa.

His music often explores ways of approaching form and texture that draw on the impressions left by the sonic, literary, cinematic, and visual works of other artists.

His works have been performed in South Africa, the USA, and Germany and he has received commissions from the New Music Forum at Stellenbosch, NewMusicSA, the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as from Thompson Street Opera Company, the Royal Academy of Music, Peridot Duo. He participated in masterclasses and workshops at the Unyazi 2016 Electronic Music Festival: Infrastructures, as well as at the 2018 SASRIM Composers Meeting. He is currently a JACK Studio artist for 2020-22. This two-year residency includes a commissioned work for the JACK Quartet.

He currently holds a degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal where he studied composition with composers Jurgen Brauninger and Clare Loveday.
