Sofia von Atzingen studied at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) with Carlos Aleixo and at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe with Johannes Lüthy. Her enthusiasm for contemporary music led her to pursue a Master’s degree in New Music with Barbara Maurer at Folkwang University of the Arts and to write her doctoral dissertation on the solo sonata for viola by B. A. Zimmermann as part of a doctoral program at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

From 2016 to 2018, she taught as a professor of viola at the State University of Minas Gerais in Brazil (UEMG). For several years already, the focus of her musical activity has been in the field of contemporary music and art. She is a founding member of the catinblack ensemble, a string trio for music of our time in the instrumentation of viola, cello and double bass.

She has performed as a violist and performer with various ensembles and at several contemporary music festivals including, Ensemble E-MEX, oh ton ensemble, Kollektiv3:6Koeln at the composition competition of the ACHT BRÜCKEN festival in Cologne, with MOUVOIR Company & Ensemble Garage at the Tanz im August festival in Berlin, at concerts of the NOW! festival in Essen and at the ZeitGenuss festival in Karlsruhe.

Since 2022 she is violist of the Ensemble Recherche.
