After 35 years of successful existence, Ensemble Recherche reflects on its beginnings and seeks to reinvent itself at the same time. In a mixture of lecture-performance, concert and film premiere, the musicians present their new mission: anyone can be Ensemble Recherche, whether in Freiburg, Berlin, Hong Kong or… Zeitz. Playfully, the rules of new music and ensemble work are questioned. How can an ensemble like Recherche exist in the 21st century – an ensemble that interprets works by composers at the highest technical level like no other? Tradition vs. innovation, concert vs. new formats. The evening culminates in the presentation of a documentary in which Recherche musicians, full of visions, travel as missionaries – or at the least, artistic community workers – to the East German city of Zeitz. An ambivalent act of gentrification of “West goes East” and the question of what ensemble work can be today.
