About the concert 🪸

We find ourselves underwater: with composers Kristine Tjøgersen and Mads Emil Dreyer we dive into the sound of singing schools of fish and marvel at the colorful play of the cuttlefish. But as beautiful as this underwater world is, it is also threatened: coral bleaching, plastic waste, overfishing, extinction of species, hearing-impaired porpoises….

Tim Gordon, a researcher of coral reefs, reports from the Great Barrier Reef, a coral reef off the coast of Australia: „Once there was color and life everywhere in this incredible landscape, but now it resembles a graveyard. Not only has it become much quieter here, but also the quality of the sounds has changed. The acoustic complexity is gone, there‘s much less going on today – you can literally hear a dying riff.“ Changes caused by humans, threatened ecosystems and complex nutritional systems that are out of balance… And yet the music manages to avoid an apocalyptic mood or hopelessness despite these serious themes. Rather, her fine music sensitizes us to the beauty of the underwater world and touches us so strongly precisely because we become aware of what is in danger of being lost.

The Helsinki Chamber Choir is visiting Freiburg! 🌟✨

New choral sounds from Scandinavia meet instrumental music from France and Serbia, until the evening culminates in Vito Žuraj’s new work ‘INNEN’, which he composed especially for Ensemble Recherche and Helsinki Chamber Choir in collaboration with the Austrian author Klaus Händl.

Vito Žuraj says of his new work: ‘The libretto of “INNEN” explores the deep connections between physical impairment and creative expression. It draws on the life of Claude Monet, whose progressive visual impairment had a lasting impact on his art.’

Žuraj, who suffered from severe stuttering as a child, recognised a parallel to his own story in Monet’s fate. The audience experiences the formative journey of letting go the stuttering in musical form. The three-part libretto initially builds up a great deal of tension, which seems to be released in the second part. In the end, however, it becomes clear that a certain tension always remains.

Following the world premiere in Finland, the two ensembles are now bringing their joint programme to Germany – under the baton of a former Freiburg resident: Nils Schweckendiek, who studied musicology as well as orchestral and choral conducting at the local university in addition to Cambridge and Helsinki.

German premiere

Light and shadow play an important role in Scandinavia. Anyone who has ever celebrated Midsummer knows about the life-giving, body and soul-warming power of the sun, which is eagerly awaited by the population after the depriving winter months. In “Faces and Moon Splinters”, Malin Bång uses an essential property of light: speed. In Bedrossian's “We Met as Sparks”, light also forms the starting point for a musical spark that gradually ignites. The Slovenian composer Vito Žuraj, who returns to the cathedral city in 2025 with a vocal-instrumental piece based on texts by Händl Klaus, is now also well known in Cologne. “I close my eyes, I see the night.” This is how the third part of the libretto begins, wonderfully unveiling the essence of the text. The Scandinavian focus is completed by choral music by Lotta Wennäkoski and Perttu Haapanen, who are among the figureheads of the Helsinki Chamber Choir's repertoire and whose music has never before been heard at ACHT BRÜCKEN | Musik für Köln.

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming students from the Friedrichs-Gymnasium Freiburg with their teacher Steffen Jahnke and their mentor composer Anna Sowa @sowaanna67 to the Ensemblehaus and were very happy to tryout the pieces they are writing for us! What a great job they are doing ✨🌟💪👏👏

IM.PULS

Getting young people excited about classical music

The IM.PULS project aims to get young people interested in classical music. Together with young, up-and-coming artists, they will discover the world of music. In honour of the 100th birthday of Pierre Boulez, the project year 2024/25 refers to the great composer and conductor who was very fond of young audiences.

Under the guidance of five composers - Anna Sowa, Elnaz Seyedi, Kathrin Denner, Veronika Reutz Drobnić and Benjamin Scheuer - and students from the Karlsruhe University of Music, school classes will spend a year practising composition, testing their ideas with their peers and making music with the professional musicians of the renowned Ensemble Recherche.

The four project classes come from the Realschule Baden-Baden, the Ludwig-Wilhelm-Gymnasium Rastatt, the Friedrichs-Gymnasium Freiburg and the Anne-Frank-Schule Karlsruhe.

The project has been made possible by funding from the T. von Zastrow Foundation.

About the concert;

Music – feels real

Ensemble Recherche creates a cabinet of curiosities with pieces to amaze and doubt. Music between truth and illusion, between fibbing and effectiveness. Li-Ying Wu deals with the manipulative effect of fake news and the question of how we can communicate with each other with understanding. With Stefan Prins, we enter a musical hall of mirrors that promises healing through deliberate self-deception. In his oratorio for Chat GPT, Antonio la Spina lets the algorithm oracle about the future of human creativity. Swantje Lichtenstein’s electronic pieces are based on digital revenants, on deepfakes of real people.

The second part of the concert will feature the Freiburg premiere of ‘Laub’, which Enno Poppe wrote for Recherche and premiered in Cologne in 2024. ‘Laub’ works like the Silent Mail: each bar is a variation of the previous one until a completely different message is communicated at the end. Does this message have anything to do with foliage, or does Poppe’s powerful choice of title tempt us to want to hear the rustling of leaves in the music?

There are enough absurd and alarming events in the world to leave us open-mouthed in amazement. On this evening, it is our ears that we should open in amazement – perhaps there will be a small chamber miracle.

A cooperation between Ensemble Recherche and the Freunde of the Ensemble Recherche e.V.

This project is part of a broad effort by Ensemble Recherche in its 2024/25 season (“What is Real/What is Not”) to engage in discussion about Artificial Intelligence and the impact it will have on Art and Creativity.

About the concert:

Helsinki Chamber Choir was to have given the world premiere of a new work, INNEN, by Vito Žuraj in September  2020, but the pandemic changed the plans. It is now to be heard for the first time, nearly five years later. To a libretto commissioned from Händl Klaus, the work examines the unfiltered creativity of a disabled person with reference to Monet the painter and his gradual loss of sight. The first joint concert by the Helsinki Chamber Choir and the Freiburg-based Ensemble Recherche will also feature a virtuoso solo work for female voice and instrumental ensemble by Sweden’s Malin Bång and works by Lotta Wennäkoski, Perttu Haapanen and Franck Bedrossian.
