“I work at the piano.” Which musicians would speak of themselves in this way? An instrument is played, reviews offer descriptions of the joy of playing, and a mistake is considered a “misplay” (even if the question remains open as to what is misplayed through imperfection). What does it mean in a professional context to understand music as play? Can an instrument be a toy? In a workshop of playfulness, Ensemble Recherche explores the playful nature of new music. Together with two instrument makers, new instruments have been created in the process: Fedde ten Berge tinkered with a sensor-controlled loop machine for electronic sounds, while Léo Maurel’s octopus-like organ variant enters into play with the air. In collective workshops with the composers Ricardo Eizirik, Anda Kryeziu, Matthias Krüger and Kristine Tjøgersen, new pieces for the Ensemble Recherche have been developed. And last but not least, the audience mutates into a player at the concert. At the family concert, we take lessons from the true experts of playing: here, the children are allowed to play the new sound generators.
