With the story of a rabbi’s son who leaves his shtetl in Galicia to become a celebrated star of the stage at Vienna’s Burgtheater, Ewald André Dupont created a highlight of Jewish filmmaking in Germany with “The Ancient Law” in 1923. In its newly restored version with music by Philippe Schoeller, the film became a celebrated rediscovery at Berlinale in 2018.
